India’s star batter, Shubman Gill, opens up on his struggles in red-ball cricket, despite a brilliant performance for Punjab. In their Ranji Trophy match against Karnataka, Gill scored an impressive 102, hitting 14 fours and three sixes. He played a great inning but failed to rescue his team, unfortunately, Punjab was bowled out for 213 and lost the match by an inning and 207 runs.

After struggling in the Test series against Australia, Gill spoke openly about his issues with red-ball batting. He admitted, “Red-ball batting is a concern. Sometimes, I think with the red ball, in the matches that I play, I get very good 25-30 runs. I think in those moments, sometimes I put too much pressure on myself to be able to score big runs. I think that is not the way that I have grown up playing my game,” Gill told PTI. This self-imposed pressure often makes him lose focus and concentration during critical moments.

Preparing for a comeback

In the recent Border Gavaskar Trophy, Gill managed only 93 runs across three matches, with a highest score of 31. This led to him being dropped for the fourth Test in Melbourne. At 25, Gill is determined to regain his form, especially with the Champions Trophy 2025 coming up, where he is set to be the vice-captain. He explained, “There is a certain zone that I am in, certain intent that I am in and sometimes I think I lose that because I put too much pressure on myself that I have to get big runs now that I am set. I think in those crucial moments, I sometimes lose my focus and concentration. I think it keeps you in the game all the time,” he added. As he works on his game, Gill aims to overcome these challenges and make a strong return to form.
