Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar reckons India might play an extra spinner in their game against Pakistan on Sunday. Rohit Sharma and co. will lock horns with their arch-rivals and will be aiming to carry on with the winning momentum in Dubai. The first game against Bangladesh saw only Axar Patel among the Indian spinners who tasted success in terms of getting wickets.

Varun Chakravarthy in IND vs PAK tie?

In a conversation with Sports Today, Gavaskar pointed out that despite pacers getting more wickets in Dubai in IND vs BAN, it was the spinners who kept things under control. He noted that a lot of cricket had been played off late in Dubai, with the ILT20 just concluding last week, and that hence the surface was worn out. Gavaskar reckoned that since the surface could assist the spinners more, India could perhaps consider playing Varun Chakravarthy in IND vs PAK clash.

“The pacers got wickets for both teams. Shami got 5 and Harshit Rana got 3. While the pacers got wickets, the spinners were the ones who kept control, the ones who bowled tightly. I would imagine maybe that they make look to go in with Varun Chakravarthy as the extra spinner for Pakistan game,” Gavaskar said.

While claiming that India might consider playing Varun, Gavaskar had also pointed out that Hardik Pandya was being seen as a new-ball bowler. This could very well mean what India will be forced to drop Harshit Rana if they decide to go in with the extra spinner.

After impressing in the T20I series, Varun was fast-tracked to ODIs as well. He then made a last-minute entry into India’s Champions Trophy squad, replacing Yashasvi Jaiswal. The mystery spinner already has the experience of playing in UAE, having featured in the T20 World Cup in 2022. The Tamil Nadu spinner will only bolster India’s spin unit, with the team relying on the spinner to take the opposition by surprise.
