Sunil Gavaskar expressed concerns over Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) failure to finish a manageable run chase against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) last night. Despite needing just 18 runs with five wickets in hand in the final two overs, RR fell short by 11 runs at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, losing a close match for the third time in IPL 2025.

Josh Hazlewood’s excellent bowling in the penultimate over, where he gave away only one run and took two wickets, added pressure on the Rajasthan batters, and eventually they choked again.

Gavaskar slams Rajasthan Royals

Gavaskar was puzzled by RR’s inability to handle pressure, especially with Rahul Dravid, who is known for his strategic brilliance and now RR’s head coach. “With Rajasthan Royals, I’m actually talking about the earlier matches where I wasn’t at the ground, I just saw them. So, you’re not always able to get the feeling of what’s really happening. But here, I was at the ground, and you could actually see the kind of cricket that was being played. And with someone like Rahul Dravid as the coach, it was quite baffling, it was unthinking cricket,” Gavaskar said to Star Sports.

He continued, “Where is the thought process there? You can’t expect inexperienced players to always get it right, but still… It’s just a different kind of cricket. Dravid was always so precise in his thinking, and I would’ve thought that kind of approach would’ve seeped into some of the Rajasthan batters.”

Dravid’s influence and RR’s struggles

Dravid, who led India to a T20 World Cup victory in June 2024, returned to RR as head coach, hoping to make a positive impact in the team. However, his first season back with the franchise has been challenging, as RR is struggling, effectively out of the playoff contention with only two wins in nine games. This recent defeat showed the issues they need to resolve to regain their winning form.
