A day after the International Cricket Council (ICC) meeting with 15 boards, Chief of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Mohsin Naqvi once again talked about Pakistan hosting the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in its entirety. After having discussions regarding the multi-nation tournament with the ICC and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Naqvi, who is also Pakistan’s Federal Minister of Interior, met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Lahore.

PCB adamant about hosting Champions Trophy 2025

Among other things, they also talked about the Champions Trophy. Naqvi reassured Sharif that “the PCB is fully prepared to host the Champions Trophy tournament in Pakistan.” The PCB has been adamant since the start about hosting the 8-team tournament and hasn’t changed its tune despite pushback from the ICC and the BCCI.

PCB vs BCCI

The BCCI refused to send the Indian cricket team after convening with their government, but the PCB’s stance didn’t change one bit. They remained adamant about hosting the Champions Trophy 2025, which was awarded to them in 2021. Knowing that the event wouldn’t be possible without India, the ICC had advised the PCB to reconsider and accept a hybrid model by which Team India would play their matches in a neutral venue. The PCB didn’t accept. 

The stalemate continued, but after a few weeks, PCB finally budged. Earlier this week, it was reported that Pakistan was willing to change their stance but with certain terms and conditions. These were:

• The Pakistan cricket team won’t play Team India in India in the upcoming ICC events
• Compensation from ICC for moving 5 games outside of Pakistan, especially for the India vs Pakistan match, which was scheduled to be played in Lahore on March 1
• India will accept playing a tri-series with Pakistan and another nation in a neutral venue
• India and Pakistan are drawn into separate groups for the Champions Trophy 2025
