India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja seems to be indispensable at the moment, at least in Tests, given his fitness standards, and what he offers with the bat & ball, and even his fielding. But truth be told, he is not getting any younger, and at some point the team management will have to think of grooming a likely successor.

After Ravindra Jadeja, Who?

The team management seems to have missed the bus with R Ashwin, who retired midway through the IND vs AUS series. It seems that Washington Sundar is the likely replacement there, but there of course are question marks, if he can be drafted in the team on a consistent basis; and a similar situation should be avoided for Ravindra Jadeja.

Is there anyone who can replace Jaddu? The answer is a, yes and a no. For his talent and skill, no one can, but an alternate is there for sure. Just like many domestic stars, this Mumbai all-rounder isn’t much discussed for a Test berth, but has excellent numbers with bat and ball. It is Shams Mulani — the left arm orthodox bowler and left hand batter from Mumbai, who has been sensational in the last few seasons of FC cricket.

For the record, he has played 46 matches till now, scored 1915 runs at an average of 31, and picked 216 wickets too. This year alone he has picked up 36 wickets at an average of 28, and scored 261 runs at an average of 26. His best year was 2022-23 where his numbers just went through the roof. In batting, he scored 376 runs at an average of 31, and then also went to pick up 57 wickets in the season, at an average of 24.

Now whether he gets a chance or not, he has shown with his domestic performances, that he should be in the mix for a national team berth. Whether he succeeds to replicate Jadeja’s performance, is a debate for another day, but Shams Mulani could be one of the best all-rounders in domestic circuit right now.
