Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni commented about the decision to leave out Ravichandran Ashwin from the playing XI against LSG. CSK finally ended their losing streak by picking up a 5-wicket win against the hosts on Monday. MSD may have dropped a hint about Ashwin’s immediate future in the team following the team’s success against LSG.

Why did CSK not play Ashwin?

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Dhoni remarked that the team had been putting too much pressure on Ashwin. He noted that the spinner was being used in the powerplay, which did impact him. Further, Dhoni said that after dropping Ashwin, the team’s bowling attack looked better.

“We were putting too much pressure on Ash. He was bowling two overs in the first six. We made changes and this looks like a better attack,” Dhoni said.

Ashwin so far in IPL 2025

Ashwin made his return to CSK after 10 years. He was bagged by the Men in Yellow for Rs 9.75 crore after he was released by RR ahead of IPL 2025. However, his comeback did not start on a bright note.

In fact, Ashwin has only managed to take five wickets in 6 matches so far in IPL 2025. He has conceded 198 runs from 120 balls at an economy rate of 9.90. Perhaps, it might the expensive factor which has forced Dhoni to rethink CSK’s strategy in terms of bowling.

What happened in yesterday’s IPL match?

CSK won the toss and opted to bowl in Lucknow, against LSG. That said, MS Dhoni went with two changes — where Shaikh Rasheed came in for Devon Conway, and Jamie Overton comes in for R Ashwin. Come the first innings, batting was a bit of a struggle for the top order LSG batters — as they were 79/3 in 10 overs. Eventually with Rishabh Pant’s maiden 50 in this year’s IPL, they reached 166.

Come the chase, despite losing way in the middle overs, Shivam Dube and MS Dhoni ensured CSK cross the finish line, after a gap of five matches.
