Delhi Capitals vice-captain Faf du Plessis threw his weight behind the impact player rule in IPL 2025 after Ashutosh Sharma’s whirlwind knock. Coming is as an impact substitute, the batter smashed a 31-ball 66-run knock that saw DC clinch a nail-biting 1-wicket win against LSG. du Plessis stated that the rule was in place to help teams in situations where they believe they’re dead and buried.

du Plessis backs impact player rule in IPL 2025
Pointing at the result of the game due to Ashutosh’s blitzkrieg, du Plessis said that that was exactly why the impact player rule was in place. He hinted that it was futile for a lot of cricketers to complain about the rule.
“A lot of the cricketers, if you ask them, they would complain about the rule in the IPL but this is obviously why that rule is there – for games when you think that you’re completely dead and buried, someone comes in and plays like that,” du Plessis said.
Coming into bat at 65/5, the former PBKS batter took his own sweet time to settle his nerves, waited for a solid partner at the other end, to deliver the knockout punch to leave Rishabh Pant shell-shocked.
To dive deeper into Ashutosh’s innings, in his first 20 balls, he could only score 20. And from there on, the next 11 fetched him 46. Overall, he hit five fours and as many sixes to end the match with three balls and a wicket to spare. In short, he just picked up from where he left last year. In the 2024 season, in 11 matches he had scored 189 runs at a strike-rate of 167.
