India cricket team pacer Mohammed Shami recalled his 14-month wait to return to action after being on the sidelines owing to an injury. The veteran pacer turned the clock back to rattle the Bangladesh batters in India’s opening game of the Champions Trophy. Shami finished with figures of 5/53 in 10 overs.

Shami recalls difficult road to comeback

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Shami said that his road to comeback wasn’t easy, especially because of the long 14 month gap. He said that he was lucky to have some domestic games under his belt which helped him in his return to international cricket. Shami admitted that it was a very difficult 14 months, adding that it was painstaking to watch matches from home instead of being able to stick with the team and contribute.

“It was a break of 14 months and I was lucky to have domestic matches under my belt to help me get back. It was a very difficult 14 months because you have to go through the entire process and it isn’t easy. In close matches, sitting at home you miss being with your team and feel like I wish I was there to contribute,” Shami said.

Shami returned to international cricket earlier this year in the IND vs ENG T20I series. Prior to that, he had last played for India in the ODI World Cup final in 2023. He was then ruled out of action owing to an ankle injury that even saw him go under the knife in 2024. Cut to the Champions Trophy now, Shami is back in action and is leading the Indian pace attack in the absence of Bumrah.

India put up a clinical performance against Bangladesh in their opening game of the Champions Trophy. Rohit and co. clinched a 6-wicket win against the Tigers, with Shubman Gill, Shami, KL Rahul and Axar Patel starring for India. Shami looked like he was back to his old form as the veteran pacer ran through the opposition to pick up a five-wicket haul. Harshit Rana bagged 3 wickets while Axar took two. Bangladesh were bowled out for 228.
