Who would have thought that Royal Challengers Bengaluru could win WPL 2025’s opening match vs Gujarat Giants, despite being set a target of 202, and after losing Smriti Mandhana and Danii Wyatt early. If that wasn’t enough, RCB lost Ellyse Perry (57) at 100, in the 11th over still needed 102 from just 54 deliveries.
The match was all but gone, and it was GG who were tipped to cruise to the finish line; until they made a mess of a Richa Ghosh catch, when she was still batting at 1. The 21-year-old changed the match completely and took her team to an improbable victory, as she played one of the best innings in WPL history, slammed 64 on 27 deliveries, to take her side home.
What happened on that Priya Mishra delivery in the 12th over is, she tossed the ball up and Richa Ghosh went for a big one over long on, but Simran Shaikh made a complete mess of the catch. And that was it. From there on, the India keeper did not look back, and slammed 7 fours and four towering sixes to finish the match in style.
She was ably supported by little-known Kanika Ahuja, who hit 30 from 13 deliveries, to announce her arrival on the scene. Which meant, RCB created history by chasing down the highest total in the history of WPL. The previous best was 191 by MI vs the same opposition in WPL 2024.
Richa was particularly severe against all-round sensation Ash Gardener and hit her for 23 runs in the 16th over that changed the course of the match. That over included one six and four fours, that broke the confidence of the Gujarat team.
