Along with Rohit Sharma, opener, Shubman Gill has been introduced as the vice-captain for the team; meanwhile, Yashasvi Jaiswal came in as the third-choice opener for the team. Many experts and fans argue that the 27-year-old experienced ODI batter Ruturaj Gaikwad is not given a chance in the Champions Trophy squad. But why doesn’t Gaikwad get a chance in the squad? Poor performance in Vijay Hazare Trophy

Ruturaj Gaikwad is clearly not in form. The player didn’t perform in the premier 50-over format domestic tournament, the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Gaikwad, who captains the Maharashtra cricket team, hasn’t performed well, not even in the top 10 batters in the tournament. In the 7 innings he has played, he has scored 194 runs in the tournament. The only big innings from his bat came in the second match against Services where he scored 148 runs. He had an average of 32.33 in the tournament, which is below expectations.

SMAT and India-A Woes

Not just the Vijay Hazare Trophy, but the player is not in form in T20 and Test cricket as well, just like Yashasvi Jaiswal has been picked up based on his Test cricket form, Ruturaj doesn’t even make a case for himself based on Test or T20 record. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he played 5 innings and scored only 123 runs. Again, only big innings came against Services, where he scored 97 runs; in the other four innings, he couldn’t reach 20 runs.

Similarly, before the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, he played two matches against Australia A, where he captained the team, but scored only 20 runs in 4 innings, which was a disappointing show.

Ruturaj Gaikwad don’t deserve a place in the squad now

After all these poor performances, we can easily say why Ruturaj Gaikwad didn’t deserve a place in the Champions Trophy squad. The player is not in form and performing poorly across all formats; if he regains his form and performs brilliantly, he might get a chance to don the Indian jersey once again.
