Controversy seems to be the word best associated with the ICC Champions Trophy. With the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) at odds, nothing is coming easy at the moment. In their battle for letting go an inch, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is sandwiched in between. They can’t upset the most powerful board but also must respect the host nation.

BCCI vs PCB, once again

After a long deliberation, the venue kerfuffle was sorted. BCCI and PCB reached an amicable agreement by which neither will tour each other for the next couple of years and will play against each other at neutral venues in ICC tournaments. One hoped that would be the end of it, but it’s not.

As we get close to the ICC Champions Trophy, another issue arises. This time, the matter isn’t of much importance. As is tradition, all the captains are to meet for a photoshoot a couple of days before the 8-team tournament kicks off on February 19. But since the India cricket team isn’t travelling to Pakistan, how can Rohit Sharma?

Rohit Sharma going to Pakistan for captains’ meet?

According to the Telegraph India, there is a strong possibility that the Indian captain or any other member won’t be present for the captains’ meet. The PCB has made it clear that they won’t shift the captains’ meet to Dubai, where Team India plays all of their matches. And the ICC is going to respect PCB’s decision.

The BCCI isn’t going to budge either. The PCB has informed the ICC about said captains’ meet, but the BCCI claims they haven’t been intimated. Neither Rohit Sharma nor any other member of Team India was required to travel to Pakistan. “We haven’t got any such proposal. This hasn’t been part of our discussions with the ICC,” BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia told the Telegraph India.

Solution: No ICC Champions Trophy captains’ meet?

This could mean that only 7 teams are present for the captains’ meeting expected to take place in either Lahore or Karachi, or it’ll be cancelled. If no one from the Indian camp is travelling to Pakistan, the news might be much bigger than the event being cancelled, and that’s why the ICC might do the latter than the former.
