D Gukesh is on the cusp of creating history. The 18-year-old Indian has the chance to break legendary Garry Kasparov’s record and become the youngest-ever World Chess Champion. After beating the defending champ, China’s Ding Liren, in the 11th round of the World Chess Championship 2024.

Gukesh managed to win after just 29 moves after the last seven rounds had ended in a draw, and things had been leveled ever since Gukesh beat Liren in the third round. They have opened play with a Reti Opening system, and the defending champ had spent nearly 40 minutes before making his fifth move. A little while later, Gukesh started pondering as he spent more than an hour making his 11th move.

Gukesh has his eyes on the prize. Having taken the lead for the first time, the 18-year-old just needs to secure three draws to win, but he’s not letting loose. “This is a very important win. We’ve been going head-to-head for the last seven games, so considering that this game was crucial. There are three more important games to go,” he said after the match.

  • Round 1: Liren started his title defence with a strong performance, defeating Gukesh with black pieces in the opening round.
  • Round 2: Gukesh and Ding played a lacklustre draw in the second round.
  • Round 3: Gukesh bounced back, securing a win with white pieces to level the score.
  • Rounds 4, 5, 6: The next three rounds ended in draws, with both players adopting a cautious approach.
  • Round 7: Despite Gukesh having a notable time advantage early on, Ding rallied to stop the Indian Grand Master from taking the lead.
  • Round 8: Gukesh pulled off a draw to keep the scores tied. Despite being in an uncomfortable position, Ding Liren pulled off a draw after 51 moves.
  • Rounds 9, 10: Like the last rounds, the rounds ended in draws in 54 and 36 moves respectively.
