It is time for a major change in West Indies cricket as the CWI named changes in leadership for teams across formats. While Kraigg Brathwaite stepped down from the role of Test captaincy, and the new red-ball skipper is yet to be announced, Shai Hope, the talented wicket-keeper batter takes over as the new T20I skipper, having already gotten the ODI captaincy in 2022.
Kraigg Brathwaite No More West Indies Test Captain
Hope replaces Rovman Powell, who had been at the helm of affairs since May 2023. In 37 matches, he tasted success 19 times and ended up on the losing side 17 times, with a decent win% of 51.35. He led the West Indies to home series win against India, England and South Africa, and even took the side to Super 8 stage in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Over Shai Hope’s appointment as the skipper, coach Daren Sammy said, “Shai Hope’s appointment signals a progressive shift for West Indies cricket, given his success with the 50 over team in the last 18 months. As the team continues its evolution, Hope blends instinctive decision-making with analytical precision, using in-depth match data and player performance insights to shape strategy.
Shai Hope the New T20I Skipper
“Shai is a strong believer in team performances, and his meticulous preparation, coupled with his calm and composed demeanor under pressure, makes him an ideal leader at this stage.” Hope will begin his tenure as T20I skipper on the tour of Ireland and England in June.
Meanwhile, talking about Brathwaite, he had taken over the Test captaincy in 2021, and was responsible for taking his team to win over Australia, Down Under, after a gap of 27 years.
