In a major development, the BCCI has revoked the ban on the use of saliva to shine the ball for IPL 2025 as per a report in Cricbuzz. This decision comes after there were pertinent doubts raised over the relevance of the rule still. Another key change that the board introduced for the league on Thursday was, that a second new ball could be used in the 2nd innings of the match, starting the 11th over.

Relief For Bowlers Through BCCI Rule Change, Can Use Saliva to Shine Ball

The new rule was introduced during the captains’ meet for the IPL 2025, at the Cricket Centre in Mumbai. Also, now a second new ball will be introduced in the 11th over of the second innings of any IPL match. The main objective of this rule is to negate the impact of dew during the night matches.

Mohammed Shami’s Plea Makes an Impact

Earlier, someone of the stature of Mohammed Shami too had spoken about the lifting the ban on use of saliva. “We always keep requesting the authorities to allow us to use saliva so that swing and reverse comes into play during matches,” Shami had said after a Champions Trophy game in Dubai recently. “The saliva ban has been lifted. Majority of captains were in favour of the move,” a top BCCI official told PTI.

It is important to note that the Saliva ban on the ball had come in place during the Covid-19, where the ICC had advocated for safe play. Meanwhile, the change of the ball in the second innings, is a decision, that the umpires will make on the field, and is not mandatory.

It’s up to the umpires to determine whether the ball needs to be changed. They will decide based on the presence of dew,” a source explained. As a result, this rule will primarily apply to night games, and it is unlikely that a second ball will be used in afternoon matches.
