Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad started his IPL 2025 campaign in style with a smooth half-century against Mumbai Indians (MI) on Sunday. This was his 19th fifty from 68 matches in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Gaikwad rushed to his fifty off just 22 balls – his fastest in the IPL. Gaikwad has had a rapid growth in the IPL after debuting in 2020. He finished with 204 runs from 6 matches in his debut season before winning the Orange Cap next summer.

In the 2022, Gaikwad scored 368 runs and followed it up with 590 as CSK lifted the trophy for the fifth time to go level with MI.

Last year, after MS Dhoni decided to step down as CSK captain, Gaikwad was the automatic choice, having been their best batter for the better part of the last decade.

On Sunday, CSK sent Rahul Tripathi, the Impact Sub to open alongside Rachin Ravindra but he was dismissed early by Deepak Chahar.

Gaikwad, who has excelled as an opener for CSK, walked in at No.3 and was quick off the blocks with some scintillating stroke play.

So fluent was Gaikwad that he left Ravindra, the in-form New Zealand southaw in his wake and reached his fifty off just 22 balls. At that stage, Ravindra had faced 17 balls and scored only 20.
