It is no surprise that sparks will fly when India lock horns with Pakistan in the ICC Champions Trophy. The two arch-rivals have had their fair share of rivalry in international cricket over the years. While recent matches have been rather entertaining, they have been devoid of any major controversies. Today, we take a look at 5 major controversies in IND vs PAK matches.
Gautam Gambhir vs Shahid Afridi (2007)
Back in 2007, the current India head coach Gautam Gambhir was involved in a war of words with Shahid Afridi. The southpaw went on to slam a fine boundary against the Pakistani all-rounder and barged into each other while crossing the pitch. The duo was then engulfed in verbal assaults. However, the fire was extinguished as the umpires and the players jumped in to separate the duo.
Harbhajan Singh vs Shoaib Akhtar (2010)
Off the field, Shoaib Akhtar and Harbhajan Singh have been pals. But on the pitch, they have been fierce rivals. Back in the Asia Cup of 2010, Akhtar bowled a dot ball, then glared and abused Harbhajan. In reply, the ace Indian spinner lobbed the next delivery hard to send it packing in the stands.
Inzamam-ul-Haq angry at fan (1997)
Inzamam-ul-Haq, the former Pakistan Cricket Team captain had a huge argument with a fan. Back in 1997, in a match at Toronto, Inzamam lost his cool on an Indian fan. The fan had apparently made the player angry by calling him “aloo” which translates to a potato owing to Inzamam’s physique. The player apparently rushed to the stands to fight against the fan before he was stopped by the security.
Javen Miandad (1992)
While others had a laugh, Indian skipper Mohammad Azharuddin was not at all happy with Javen Miandad’s antics. The Pakistan star player tried to mimic Indian keeper Kiran More’s antic of jumping while appealing for an out. The Pakistani batter hopped like a kangaroo much to the fury of the Indian skipper.
Aamer Sohail vs Venkatesh Prasad (1996)
Back in the 1996 quarter-final World Cup, Aamer Sohail went on to sledge Indian pacer Venkatesh Prasad after slamming a fine boundary. But the Indian pacer had the last laugh on the very next ball. It was an incredible delivery and he bowled the batter and then angrily sent him off the field.
