Tilak Varma had a night to forget at the Ekana Stadium. Named as an impact substitute, the young left-hander did the opposite in the Mumbai Indians’ 12-run loss to the Lucknow Super Giants on Friday. Chasing 204 to win, Varma mustered a 23-ball 25 before being subbed out by captain Hardik Pandya.

Tilak Varma becomes 1st MI player to be retired out

Mumbai Indians brought in Tilak Varma at the fall of Naman Dhir’s wicket, with the visitors needing 118 to win in 12 overs. While Suryakumar Yadav seemed in good touch, Tilak struggled to get going. The 22-year-old was sluggish to start with, with Digvesh Rathi tying him in a bind. The left-hander tried to hit his way out, but couldn’t get his timing right. Eventually with 24 runs needed of 7 deliveries, MI took Varma off, making him just the 4th batter to retire out in IPL.

Ravichandran Ashwin (RR) vs LSG, 2022

Ravichandran Ashwin was the first to retire out in the IPL, with the Rajasthan Royals taking the all-rounder put in their game against Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2022. Ashwin walked into bat in the 10th over, rebuilding the innings with Shimron Hetmyer. However, with the death overs impending, the Royals had him retired out, with Parag replacing him. The move worked wonders, with the Royals sealing a close 3-run win.

2. Atharva Taide (PBKS) vs DC, 2023

Chasing 214 to win, Atharva Taide scored a sedate half-century after PBKS lost Shikhar Dhawan early. However, with Liam Livingstone in full flow and Punjab needing 71 in the last five overs, the left-hander made way for Jitesh Sharma. The tactic failed with Jitesh and Shah Rukh Khan both falling cheaply in a 13-run loss.

3. Sai Sudarshan (GT) vs MI, 2023

Sai Sudharsan was retained by Gujarat Titans, looking at his performance in the previous season of IPL.

Sai Sudharsan was the 3rd player to sub out in IPL history, during their Qualifier 2 against the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2023. Batting on 43, the left-hander made way for Rashid Khan with an over to go. Rashid got a boundary and GT plundered 233, winning the game by 62 runs.
