Lucknow Super Giants held their nerves to win a thriller against Mumbai Indians by 12 runs at the Ekana Cricket Stadium on Friday. Mumbai Indians were on course to gun down 209 but the wicket of Suryakumar Yadav near the end of the chase brought LSG back into the game.

Tilak Varma Retired Out by MI

Tilak Varma struggled towards the end and retired himself out but it was not enough as Hardik Pandya could not finish off the game despite scoring a brave 28 not out off 16 balls. It was a heartbreaking game for Mumbai Indians – two of their biggest superstars owned the evening. Hardik, before his cameo, became the first captain in the IPL to take a five-for while Suryakumar Yadav smashed a half-century in his 100th IPL match for MI.

MI had to go in without the in-form Rohit Sharma who injured his knee before the game; and it was Mumbai who dominated for most parts of the night. LSG bossed their batting Powerplay and were cool under pressure in the death of the MI innings to complete one of their greatest victories.

MI Batters Flop, Suryakumar Yadav Only Bright Spot

When you are chasing a 200+ target, you would expect your openers to do the exact opposite of what Will Jacks and Ryan Rickelton did – they failed and left the side tottering at 17 for 2. That set the stage for India’s T20 batting firepower. Naman Dhir was unstoppable in his 24-ball 46. The innings was punctuated with 4 fours and 3 sixes. That hurricane knock brought the MI chase back on track and left Sky to do Sky things alongside Tilak Varma.

The pair stuck to their job and lit the field with sweetly timed boundaries; Rishabh Pant at one point was furious with Avesh Khan for not bowling to his field against two of the most dangerous T20 batters in the modern game.

LSG Bowlers Deliver in Death Overs

Suryakumar Yadav capped off his 100th IPL match for MI with his 25th IPL fifty and it was Avesh Khan who ended the storm to give LSG a foot in the door. MI needed 29 off the last 2 overs with Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya, still fresh from his 5-wicket haul, well set in the middle. Shardul Thakur bowled a brilliant penultimate over and gave away just 7 runs. He made it so difficult for the MI batters that Tilak Varma decided to retire himself as Mitchell Santner walked in to join Hardik.

Avesh Khan bowled the last over with only 4 fielders allowed outside the circle because of LSG’s slow over-rate. Hardik hit the first ball of the 20th over for a six and even turned down a single with 14 needed off 3 balls – he could not get the results he wanted in the next two balls and LSG were able to seal a nail-biting victory.

The LSG innings was a tale of two halves. Mitchell Marsh, bounced back from the golden duck in his last game to smash a 27-ball fifty and lead the carnage in the Powerplay. LSG raced away to 69 for 0 off 6 overs even as Marsh’s opening partner Aiden Markram faced only 6 balls.
