This season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be different. We saw a whole lot of changes prior to the IPL 2025 mega auction, with the purse of the teams getting amped up ₹20 crore extra. The mega auction was truly a huge one, with the prices of Rishabh Pant (₹27cr) and Shreyas Iyer (₹26.75) going through the roof. It was surely something that franchise cricket never saw. - Bowlers were denied to use saliva to shine the ball since the Covid-19 pandemic
Two-ball rule to counter dew:
- In night matches, captains can opt for a ball change after the 11th over of the second innings.
- The bowling team will be provided with a ball of similar condition.
- The umpire’s discretion will be final in allowing the ball to change.
No match bans for over-rate offences
- Captains will no longer face match bans for slow over-rate offences.
- Instead, they’ll receive demerit points and a 25-75% match fee deduction.
- A Level 1 offence will lead to demerit points, while a Level 2 offence will attract four demerit points
New technology for wides and no-balls:

Rishabh Pant won’t be getting just ₹27 crore per season. Instead, he will earn ₹7.5 lac as additional bonus for every match he gets to play. Yes, for those unaware, the BCCI announced the rule of extra match fees to recognise the players and help those who earn less through their IPL contracts.
- A match fee has been introduced for the first time in the history of IPL. Each Playing member (Including the Impact Player) will get a match fee of INR 7.5 Lakhs per match. This will be in addition to his contracted amount.

New changes during practice for IPL 2025
Also, for the first time, there are restrictions on practice sessions before the IPL 2025 kicks off. The BCCI has outlined that teams can engage in only two warm-up games or center-wicket practice sessions. The objective? To ensure the pitches and stadium facilities remain in pristine condition for the high-octane tournament. All major changes for practice are below:
- Teams can practice range hitting on one of the side wickets on the main square and two nets in the practice area. Both sides will receive two wickets each at the Mumbai venue if they practise simultaneously.
- Open nets will not be permitted under any circumstances.
- If one team completes its practice session earlier than scheduled, the other team is not allowed to extend its practice into the available slot.
- No practice will be allowed on match days, ensuring the pitch remains in peak condition.
- No fitness test will take place on the Match Day on the main square.
- For the first time in IPL history, franchises will be limited to a maximum of seven practice sessions before their opening match.

WAGs not allowed anymore?
Similar to what rules have been in place for the Indian cricket team, the new SOPs for IPL are quite similar. One of the major notice has been the fact that the family members won’t be allowed to enter the dressing room even after the matches.
- On practice days (pre-tournament and tournament), only authorised personnel are permitted on the field of play and in the dressing room. Family members and friends of players are permitted to ride in a separate car and observe team practices from the hospitality area.
- The BCCI must approve the list of extended support personnel (net bowlers and throw down specialists). Accreditations for non-match days will be granted after approval.
- Players to use the team bus while coming for practice. Teams may travel in two batches.
- For any request related to practice, fitness test on Match days, Venue Manager will be the POC.
