Royal Challengers Bangalore arrived at Eden Gardens and ruined Kolkata Knight Riders’ party in the opening match of IPL 2025 on Saturday. It was the perfect setting for KKR, the defending champions. A new captain, a new opener, and an Indian mystery spinner in the form of his life. But the title holders looked clueless amid some superb T20 performances by RCB’s superstars.
Krunal Pandya Plays Big Part in RCB Win
First, Krunal Pandya ripped apart KKR’s batting line-up before Phil Salt destroyed Varun Chakravarthy and Virat Kohli did what he does best anchor a chase! KKR lost Quinton de Kock cheaply but Ajinkya Rahane walked in at No.3 and added 103 in less than 10 overs with Sunil Narine, the most reassuring of KKR’s players. Eden Gardens was buzzing as this stage – did Rahane not do exactly this for Chennai Super Kings?
But Krunal Pandya dashed KKR’s hopes with a stunning spell. In the course of his 4 overs, Krunal dismissed Rahane, Venkatesh Iyer and Rinku Singh – the big stars who would have been expected to lay the foundation for the team. To make matters worse, Andre Russell fell to Suyash Sharma, who was RCB’s most expensive bowler of the night.
Phil Salt & Virat Kohli End Chase Soon
Angkrish Raghuvanshi’s cameo (30 off 22) helped KKR to 174 for 8, still a far cry from at least the 200 they would have been eyeing at one stage. The target proved to be a walk in the park or a garden in this case. Phil Salt, who had been with KKR until last season, turned up in RCB colours this season and decided to take on the best bowler in their ranks. It was pure hitting, pure T20 destruction and a good sign for a team which has for years boasted of superstars without a title.
RCB Register First Points in IPL 2025
Virat Kohli, in red-hot form at the other end, stayed glued in the middle and used his feet to manipulate the field and run hard as ever for himself and his partners. He smashed his 56th IPL fifty and let new RCB captain Rajat Patidar take the lead in a blistering stand as the team inched closer to victory.
KKR will next travel to Guwahati while RCB fly down to Chennai to take on CSK.
