🥎SOFTBALL – Division I
Ponaganset 8, North Kingstown 2
Maia Salvo powered the Chieftains’ offense and Mattea Mello had one of the best games of her young career in an 8-2 win over the Skippers.
Salva, a First-Team All-State selection last spring, set a tone in the first inning with a two-run homer to give Ponaganset the early lead. The Chieftains led 5-2 in the fourth when Salvo struck again, blasting a ball to right field for her second two-run homer of the game.
Mello made sure the insurance wasn’t necessary. The freshman threw seven strong innings, striking out 13 batters while giving up two hits and two earned runs.
Salvo finished the game 3-for-3 with four RBI and three runs. Jillian Baris went 2-for-3 with two runs and Kyla Angell went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run. Mia Duncan was 3-for-3 on the day and drove in a pair and Claire Barrett scored twice.
North Kingstown freshman Amelia Fries had a strong day in defeat, going 2-for-3 with a solo home run while scoring twice.
🥎SOFTBALL – Division II
Johnston 1, Portsmouth 0
Haley Boudreau was her All-State self in the circle and scored the only run she needed in a 1-0 win over the Patriots.
Up against Portsmouth’s power offense, Boudreau brought her best. The Johnston junior gave up a one-out, first-inning single and didn’t give up another until the seventh. She opened the fourth hitting a batter and walking the next and after a groundout, fielded her position to get a runner trying to score on a bunt before striking out the next to end the threat.
In the seventh, an error and a Kylie Boeh single helped Portsmouth put runners on second and third with one out, but Boudreau got two strikeouts to end the game.
Boudreau was also behind the Panthers’ lone run. She led off the bottom of the first with a single, stole second and then scored on a single by Arianna Colon in what ended up being the game’s lone run.
Her line was masterful, as Boudreau gave up two hits, walked two, hit one and struck out 15. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate. Colon was also 2-for-3.
Kaylyn Aubuchon and Boeh had Portsmouth’s two hits. Mia Ruggieiri took the hard-luck loss, spreading out six hits and three walks while striking out nine.
Mt. Hope 20, North Providence 10
Down eight runs before they got a chance to pick up a bat, the Huskies slowly mounted a comeback and finished off the game with seven runs in the fourth and fifth to pick up a 20-10 mercy-rule win over the Cougars.
The game couldn’t have started worse for Mt. Hope, as North Providence sent 13 batters to the plate and got an RBI single from Idalia Rivera and an RBI double from Adrianna Fortin that made it 8-0.
The comeback was slow and steady. The Huskies came up with three runs in the first and added two more in the second before getting another in the third. Trailing 9-6 going into the bottom of the fourth, Mt. Hope showed patience at the plate and worked walks for runs before Sophia Haberman’s fielder’s choice brought home the tying run. Ava Waddell followed with a two-run double and the Huskies added two more to take a 13-9 lead into the fifth.
Mt. Hope’s bats kept clicking there. Madison Andrews hit a two-run double and after a sac fly, Haberman hit a two-run home run to make it 18-10. Back-to-back bases-loaded walks brought in the final two runs, ending the game via the 10-run rule.
Waddell and Haberman both had huge days. Waddell, a junior, went 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs and Haberman hit the homer, had a double, drove in three and scored four times. Andrews finished with three RBI and one run, Hailey Ferreira drove in two and scored three times and Anna Van Amberg drove home two and scored twice. Liliana Bowden also scored twice in the win.
Makenna Heon paced the North Providence offense, going 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Rivera was 2-for-2 with three RBI and one run, Fortin drove in three times and Liliana Albanese scored three times in the loss.
BNS 15, Davies 3
Spotting the Patriots two runs, the Broncos bats took off, took the lead back and never took their foot off the gas in a 15-3 win.
BNS – the Burrillville and North Smithfield co-op – trailed 2-0 some iffy defense gave Davies two runs. The offense made up for it in a hurry, as Adrianna Carter tied the game with a two-run single and Grace Trowbridge but the team ahead for good with a sac fly. When the inning ended, BNS held a 4-2 lead.
Freshman Samia Shakan added to it early in the second inning, hitting a two-out solo home run that sparked a five run inning. BNS scored six times in the bottom of the third to end the game via the 12-run rule.
Shakan was a beast in the win, going 3-for-3 with the homer, two doubles, two RBI and three runs. Carter finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and three runs and Trowbridge went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run. Olivia Audette scored twice and Emma Gabrielson drove home run runs.
Jaslene Rodriguez had one of Davies’ two hits and scored once. Madison Blanchette had the other and drove in one run.
East Greenwich 7, Scituate 4
Chloe Hartman got the Avengers day started right and the rest of the lineup came up clutch when needed in a 7-4 win over the Spartans.
Hartman got things going in the first inning with a two-run single that brought home Maura Taylor and Brooke Fairbanks. EG added another run in the second and after Scituate bounced back with two in the third, the Avengers picked up another run after a Spartans’ error.
Up 4-2 heading to the bottom of the fifth, Olivia DeShazo came up with a one-out RBI double and Madeline Kortz hit a two-out single that made it a four-run game. The runs proved necessary, as Scituate scored two runs on RBIs by Isabella DeFusco and Victoria Geisser before Kayleigh Chaiyabhat retired the last two hitters of the game.
