India’s legendary spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was presented with India’s fourth-highest civilian honor, the Padma Shri Award, on Monday, April 28, after his retirement from international cricket. The renowned cricketer received the honor during a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.

Ashwin was honored by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, for his contribution to the field of sports. The former Indian spinner received the award to applause from all.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) praised Ashwin for receiving the prestigious honour. “Congratulations to @ashwinravi99 for being awarded the esteemed Padma Shri by the Hon’ble President of India @rashtrapatibhvn, recognizing his exceptional achievements and outstanding career with #TeamIndia,” said the BCCI.
R Ashwin’s cricket career
Throughout his career, Ashwin represented India in 106 Tests, 116 ODIs, and 65 T20Is. He was a key member of the 2011 World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy-winning teams. With 537 wickets, Ashwin is India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket history, behind only Anil Kumble (953), with Ashwin having 765 wickets across all formats.
Ashwin retired from international cricket after the third Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Gabba, announcing his decision in a post-match press conference. He did not feature in the final two matches of the series. Despite retiring from international cricket, Ashwin continues to play for Chennai Super Kings in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL).
