Ever since play started on the fifth day of the 3rd IND vs AUS Test in Brisbane, speculation was rife that India all-rounder R Ashwin might announce his retirement. With two more Tests to go in the series, this could just be a shock move, that the Indian fans would not have wanted.

A career that started in 2010, Ashwin saw many ups — along with winning the 2011 World Cup, 2013 Champions Trophy, and two-time finalist of the World Test Championships. It must be admitted that R Ashwin proved to be the most effective in Test matches, where he not only won numerous matches for India with ball, but with the bat as well.

If one was to look a little deeper into his stats, he was a giant in Indian conditions. At home, he picked up 383 wickets in 65 matches only, at an average of 21, and a strike rate of 46. He enjoyed great success in West Indies and Sri Lanka as well, where he picked up 32 and 38 wickets, respectively.

In Australia, he shone in patches, and in 11 matches ended his career with 40 wickets.
