Riyan Parag has recovered from his shoulder surgery. The all-rounder from Assam has been out of action for the last three months. He featured in the T20I series against Bangladesh but has missed the next two white-ball series since. Making his debut in July last year, Parag was quickly becoming a mainstay in the team under Gautam Gambhir.

The new India cricket team head coach prefers to have depth in both batting and bowling. Therefore, Parag fits the bill perfectly. He wasn’t included in the ongoing England T20I series due to injury concerns, but it seems that the National Cricket Academy (NCA) medical staff has given him a clean bill of health.
Instead of international cricket, Parag’s comeback will come in domestic cricket. The all-rounder has been named in Assam’s squad for the last round of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25. He’ll lead them against Saurashtra, taking over from Denish Das. Parag has already led Assan last season and would do so again.

Ranji Trophy, audition for ICC Champions Trophy?
Riyan Parag‘s first job would be to help Assam get a first win of the season. So far, they have lost two matches and drawn the remaining four. Parag’s own captaincy record isn’t much better (0-3 in 4 matches), and he’ll want to get their maiden victory as skipper. The Ranji Trophy game would also help him show the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that he’s fit for selection.
Parag hasn’t been selected for Team India’s squad for the ICC Champions Trophy but could be taken as a travelling reserve. Given his three-dimensional ability, he could earn one of the three spots. His performance and fitness against Saurashtra could give him a selection boost.
