For over a decade, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have taken the India cricket team to newer heights. In the aftermath of Sachin Tendulkar’s retirement, many weren’t sure how Team India would progress ahead. The modern greats didn’t fill the massive hole left by the greatest batter since Sir Donald Bradman. But their time is running out.

Sooner or later, they’ll retire. Kohli will turn 37 and Rohit Sharma 38 this year. For how long can they continue to perform? They need a successor. Much like they were to Tendulkar. According to former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar, the player who can take over from them is Shubman Gill.

Shubman Gill ready to be India’s next star batter

He has been in imperious touch. In his last five ODIs, Gill has scored 406 runs at 101.50. This includes an unbeaten century on his ICC Champions Trophy debut. Bangar reckons that Gill is the perfect candidate to be the face of Team India in the coming years.

“Clearly, he’s the guy who is going to shoulder the responsibility of the Indian team going forward in years to come,” Bangar said on JioHotstar.

What makes Shubman Gill special

To many, Gill seems like a hybrid of Kohli and Rohit Sharma. He’s got an incredible record in chases, can curb his natural aggressive game as per the tempo of the game like Kohli, and go big when needed like Rohit. The Indian management knows this as well and has rightfully named him the vice-captain of the ODI and T20I teams.

“(His) foundations are really, really strong and add to that the confidence of nearly two-and-a-half years of performing in one-day cricket. In one-day cricket, he’s been phenomenal. Now look, the straight drive and the on-drive are the shots wherein you cannot actually hit the ball really hard. But here, he was hitting the ball so hard that despite the mid-off and the mid-on fielder being on that 30-yard circle, the ball was going and hitting them. That’s the kind of timing he possesses,” Sanjay Bangar added.
