This 3.0 version of Shreyas Iyer is scary good. He’s grown heaps in the last 12 months. It all started with him getting axed from the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) central contracts for 2024-25. In the coming months, he lifted the Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy as Kolkata Knight Riders‘ captain.

Earlier this year, he won the Champions Trophy 2025 and ended as the India cricket team’s highest run scorer. Now, leading the Punjab Kings (PBKS), the captain has scored back-to-back half-centuries. In his maiden game as the skipper, Shreyas was left unbeaten on 97.

He didn’t care about his maiden IPL hundred as he let Shashank Singh farm the strike in the final over of the first innings. His batting partner later revealed that the PBKS captain had told him to score as many runs as possible. Shreyas was left hanging against the Gujarat Titans but made sure that he didn’t miss out on another milestone against the Lucknow Super Giants.

Stuck at 46 with his team needing 1 run to win the match, Shreyas smoked Abdul Samad for a maximum, and PBKS moved to the second place on the IPL 2025 points table.

“It is the start we required. The boys played their role really well. Every individual contributed to the best of their ability, and whatever was discussed in the team meeting, we implemented really well. To be honest, there’s no right combination. Just that the camaraderie and synergy have to click at the right time. I feel all teams have the right potential to go out there and win the game. It’s just that you need to have a similar kind of mindset when you go out there. I always try to be in the present as much as possible. Even this innings is now history for me. Just want to focus on the next one now,” Shreyas said after the LSG vs PBKS match.
