Shubman Gill was batting like a dream. Having scored 90 and 84 in his last two innings, it looked like the Gujarat Titans (GT) captain would finally reach the triple figures for the first time in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. You could say he was playing his finest knock of the tournament.
Gill had been on point from ball one. Sai Sudharsan’s dismissal didn’t impact him at all, as he reached his 4th fifty of IPL 2025 in just 25 balls. 10 overs were still left. Wouldn’t have been a shock that Gill went on to score a hundred. One mustn’t forget that he’s the best batter at the Narendra Modi Stadium in IPL history.

But for the third consecutive time, Gill missed out. And it wasn’t his fault this time. While completing a quick single in the 13th over, Gill was controversially adjudged out by the third umpire. The appeal from the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) players wasn’t even enthusiastic. Wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen even changed sides. Even he wasn’t confident.
Replays suggested that while Gill was very short, Klaasen had dislodged the bails with his gloves. The ball had touched the stumps, but it seemed that the bails were broken by the gloves. And perhaps that’s why Klaasen wasn’t confident either. But the third umpire, Michael Gough, thought otherwise.
He felt that the LED lights had come on when the ball touched the stumps. And adjudged it out. There was a clear deflection, but was it 100%? Perhaps it wasn’t. But Gough made the call. And GT captain Gill had to depart while being well set at 76 (38). A 5th IPL hundred seemed to be written in the record books, but it just wasn’t to be for Gill, much like his last 2 innings.
Gill angered by decision
Gill wasn’t pleased. As soon as he crossed the boundary line, he went to the fourth umpire and let his emotions out. The dissent will mean that he’ll be fined, but Gill won’t be bothered by it.
