In the coming Ranji Trophy fixures, the spotlight is on Virat Kohli and KL Rahul’s return. However, India’s former player FSunil Gavaskar warned BCCI about their new rule on domestic participation. He also took an indirect dig at India’s star player Virat Kohli and KL Rahul ahead of their Ranji Trophy return, saying that players didn’t head to NCA after injury and now are playing, so it was an excuse.

After an awful performance against Australia in the Test series, BCCI has pushed players to play domestic cricket. “Participation in domestic matches is mandatory for national selection and contracts,” as per BCCI guidelines. This rule encourages players to stay connected with domestic cricket while inspiring emerging talent.

Despite the mandate, Kohli and Rahul skipped matches due to injuries. Rahul suffered an elbow injury, while Kohli had a neck sprain. Gavaskar questioned this, stating that getting a medical certificate is now easy. He suggested that injured players should report to the National Cricket Academy for evaluation and recovery. “More interesting would be what action the BCCI takes if they don’t play. Were they injured? Getting a medical certificate for an ‘injury’ is child’s play, and if they are injured, did they go to the NCA for treatment and recovery,” Gavaskar wrote.

Did Virat Kohli & KL Rahul fake injury?

Kohli and Rahul are set to return for the final group stage. Kohli will play for Delhi against the Railways, and Rahul will represent Karnataka against Haryana. Gavaskar is keen to see what actions BCCI will take if players skip matches without valid reasons. “Isn’t that the practice for the BCCI-contracted players, that as soon as there’s an injury, they have to report to the NCA, and only after the BCCI experts there certify them as fit can they resume playing for India? For all we know, these players might have opted out of the earlier games for non-injury reasons. We shall soon find out.” he stated.
