Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni has backed his batters to come good as the five-time champions look to turn around their IPL 2025 campaign. Dhoni, who took over from the injured Ruturaj Gaikwad, saw his team crash and burn at Chepauk last time out, making it just 1 win in 6 this season. While coach Stephen Fleming downplayed their batting concerns, Dhoni wanted his batters to take more initiative and lead the charge, starting with the game against the Lucknow Super Giants on Monday.
Important to have positive mindset – MS Dhoni ahead of LSG vs CSK
Having won the toss, CSK skipper MS Dhoni decided to chase despite their struggles gunning down totals in excess of 170. However, Dhoni backed his decision suggesting the dew in Lucknow and how the pitch gets easier to bat on in the second innings. Speaking to Murali Kartik at the toss, the 43-year-old admitted that the campaign had not gone as per plan so far, but backed his players to get amongst the runs.
“It’s important to set the right temperament. We haven’t been consistent with our batting. With the ball we have strong back strong. It’s important to have a positive mindset, play those big shots. It’s a matter of time,” MS Dhoni said at the toss.
CSK have scored more than 200 only once this season, in their loss to the Punjab Kings. Their last game saw them tumble to 103/9 in their 20 overs. Overall, the CSK batters have hit only 32 sixes so far in IPL 2025. They face LSG, who have Nicholas Pooran, with the West Indian having smashed 31 alone this campaign.
Six hitting is not everything – Fleming
MS Dhoni’s comments are at odds with Stephen Fleming’s views ahead of the LSG vs CSK clash. Before the game, the Chennai Super Kings head coach downplayed his team’s concerns, suggesting that T20 cricket wasn’t a baseball competiton.
“We do struggle with six hitting, but it’s not everything. And I’d be very sad if the day came to us just being like a baseball competition and talking about sixes and fours,” Fleming said at his press conference.
