Former KKR captain Shreyas Iyer has been officially announced as the new leader of the Punjab Kings (PBKS) for the upcoming IPL 2025 season. The announcement came during a unique reveal on the popular reality show Bigg Boss 18, where megastar Salman Khan announced the major development.
Not a surprising move by PBKS: Shreyas Iyer only deserving candidate
This is a big news for Punjab Kings fans! The team has just announced Shreyas Iyer as their new captain, and it’s a game-changer. Iyer’s got the winning touch, having led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third IPL title last season. That kind of championship-winning experience is exactly what PBKS need to take their game to the next level.
And it’s clear the team is committed to making it work, having invested a whopping ₹26.75 crore in Iyer’s services during the IPL Mega auction 2025. That’s a significant chunk of change, but if anyone’s worth it, it’s Iyer. He has that winning mentality and could be a face of the team for years to come. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting, who’s worked with Iyer before, thinks he’s an excellent choice. “He’s a great guy and a great player,” Ponting said. “He’ll be an excellent leader for our team.” High praise indeed from a cricket legend like Ponting.
But Iyer’s appointment is just the start of a major overhaul for the Punjab Kings. They entered the IPL 2025 mega auction with an exorbitant purse of Rs 110.50 crore.
