The pressure to deliver is now both on the India Cricket Team and the BCCI. After the Border Gavaskar Trophy loss and India missing out on the WTC Finals, the board is determined to make some strict changes. They are willing to bring back the old fitness tests, with the Yo-yo likely to make a comeback soon.

Previously, under Virat Kohli‘s captaincy, the Yo-yo Test was used to determine the fitness levels of the players. But under the previous management under Dravid, this Test was removed owing to workload management and injury crisis of the players. Furthermore, the additional travel made it much more difficult for the players.

Will Yo-yo Test make a comeback?

But that is not likely to be the case from now onwards. The board is very unhappy with the team and Gautam Gambhir‘s struggles. As per Times of India, the Yo-yo Test can be back as a mandatory mandate as it was previously. It is believed that some of the players have been lenient and have taken advantage of the absence of the Yo-yo Test.

“The board had gone lenient on the players since they are mostly on the road. The focus had shifted to just injury prevention. This has been taken lightly by some players. It is being mooted that a certain fitness level criteria needs to be reintroduced so that complacency doesn’t creep in,” a source told the Times of India.

Apart from this, the BCCI has also made a couple of changes for the team. The stay of wives and family members has been cut short. On the other hand, it has been clear that all the players should travel together in the team bus at all times.

What is the Yo-yo Test?

The Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test t is a gruesome test where athletes’ fitness is measured. It is a repetitive test where the athletes’ ability to perform an intense workout is measured in a repetitive manner. This test is crucial in measuring a player’s aerobic capacity and recovery ability.

The test starts after the players have a proper warm-up. The athletes are then tasked to run a short distance of 20 meters. They begin at a slow pace. But after each round, they continue to increase the pace. After every run, the players have a very small recovery phase. The test stops when the player can’t continue to maintain the pace due to fatigue.
