The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is looking to strengthen the India cricket team support staff. After batting failures against New Zealand at home and Australia away, BCCI thinks a batting coach is the need of the hour. Although current head coach Gautam Gambhir has employed two assistant coaches, Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate, the BCCI isn’t exactly satisfied with their performance and has added Sitanshu Kotak as the batting coach for Team India.

Sitanshu Kotak to come in as India’s batting coach

The board feels most of the batters, including seniors Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, have struggled recently and need to work on themselves. Although Nayar works with batters, his title remains assistant coach. Ten Doeschate, meanwhile, helps players with the mental side of the game. Neither, therefore, are specialised batting coaches. This is where Sitanshu Kotak will come in.

The 52-year-old is expected to join Team India before the India vs. England T20I series starts. “Kotak will be joining the Indian team as a batting coach. The Indian team will be having a three-day camp in Kolkata, and players will be reporting on January 18,” a BCCI source told Indian Express.

Who is Sitanshu Kotak?

For the unaware, Sitanshu Kotak is a domestic great who represented Saurashtra for over 20 years. He has played 131 first-class matches and scored 8061 runs at 41.76. Apart from his stellar record in India, Sitanshu also plied his trade in County Cricket, featuring for Warwickshire.

Since retiring in 2013, the left-handed batter has turned into a coach. He started his second innings by becoming a batting coach at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). Sitanshu’s the current India A head coach, a position he’s held for the last four years. He travelled to Australia for the India A tour prior to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 and has been to Bangladesh and South Africa as well. He was Team India’s head coach when Jasprit Bumrah led the team in Ireland in August 2023.

Sitanshu has also worked in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as the assistant coach of the now-defunct Gujarat Lions in the 2017 edition of the league.
