These Are the Pardoned Jan. 6 Prisoners Convicted of Assaulting Police

Over 130 prisoners released after President Donald Trump pardoned or commuted their sentences were convicted of assaulting an officer during the January 6, 2021 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

Why It Matters

Trump’s first action after returning to the White House was pardoning about 1,500 people who were convicted in connection with the January 6 attack, when a mob of the president’s supporters stormed the Capitol in a bid to stop the certification of Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory. He commuted the sentences of another 14 people, including leaders of the Oath Keepers and the Proud Boys.

The U.S. Justice Department has filed a motion in federal court in Washington, D.C., requesting the dismissal of pending cases against individuals involved in the January 6 Capitol riot. It asked that the cases be dismissed “with prejudice,” meaning charges cannot be refiled at a later date, effectively closing the legal proceedings for these individuals.

What People Are Saying

Republican Senator Thom Tillis told CNN: “The fact that police officers could potentially be assaulted and there’s no consequence, it’s pretty straight forward to me…I think it raises a legitimate safety question on Capitol Hill.”

Republican Senator James Lankford told CNN: “I think if you attack a police officer that’s a very serious issue, and they should pay a price for that.”

Michael Fanone, former Metro Police officer who was at the Capitol during the attacks and testified in front of the House Select Committee, told CNN: “I have been betrayed by my president. Rest assured I have been betrayed by my country, and I have been betrayed by those who support Donald Trump…Tonight, six individuals who assaulted me as I did my job on January 6 as did hundreds of other law officers, will now walk free.”

Marc Caputo, senior politics reporter for Axios, told CNN: “In the end, Donald Trump had an opportunity to do a lot of work and put in the time, to separate the wheat from the chaff or he could have just done a big blanket thing, a big stroke of the pen. Donald Trump likes these big actions. In the end, that weighed out over these other considerations.”
