Following a disappointing performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, top Indian cricket stars like Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant have returned to the Ranji Trophy to regain their form. Despite high expectations, their first innings in domestic cricket showed disappointing results, pointing to the challenges they face in red ball cricket. Let’s look at how these players have performed in their Ranji comeback.

Rohit Sharma’s return to the Ranji Trophy after almost a decade did not go as planned. Batting for Mumbai against Jammu & Kashmir, he was dismissed for just 3 runs. This short stay on the pitch, lasting only 19 balls, continues his recent struggles in red-ball cricket. After the Indian cricket team suffered a 3-1 loss against Australia, it was hoped that Rohit would regain his form in domestic cricket. With the ICC Champions Trophy approaching, his early exit is concerning as he tried to recapture his batting prowess.

Yashasvi Jaiswal fails to impress

Yashasvi Jaiswal partnered with Rohit Sharma to open Mumbai’s innings but was dismissed early for just 5 runs against Jammu & Kashmir. His dismissal was a result of an in-seaming delivery from Auqib Nabi. Jaiswal’s overall performance in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy was impressive along with a 161 runs knock in Perth and consistent scores in Melbourne. His efforts in Australia showed his potential and contribution to strengthening India’s top order, even though his domestic return was not ideal.

Shubman Gill’s quiet outing

Shubman Gill, another big player in India’s regulars also struggled in his Ranji Trophy return, playing for Punjab against Karnataka. Like his peers, Gill’s performance was a poor show, as he was dismissed for just 4 runs. Despite beginning confidently with a boundary off Abhilash Shetty, he was caught behind shortly after. As the vice-captain for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, his form in red-ball cricket remains a concern following a similarly difficult series in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he scored just 93 runs in five innings.

Rishabh Pant’s poor show

Star of the BGT for India, Rishabh Pant makes his comeback in the Ranji Trophy after six years. However, he faced similar difficulties in his return to domestic cricket, managing only 1 run for Delhi against Saurashtra. His performance added to the list of star players who need to improve their form quickly ahead of international commitments.

Indian stars in BGT

Yashasvi Jaiswal 5 10 391 161 43.44 1/2
Rishabh Pant 5 9 255 61 28.33 0/1
Shubman Gill 3 5 93 31 18.60 0/0
Rohit Sharma 3 5 31 10 6.20 0/0
