Former India Cricket Team keeper-batter Wriddhiman Saha will be playing his last cricket match for Bengal as he marks the end of his career. Ahead of playing his last game, he claimed it was because of Sourav Ganguly and his wife Romi that he decided to retire from Bengal. He claimed that had previously decided to call it quits in 2023.

Wriddhiman Saha decided that it was time to call it an end. That is exactly why he decided to skip the IPL 2025 Mega Auction. He put his sole focus on red ball cricket before hanging his boots. And come the match against Punjab would be the last time he plays the game.

Why Saha returned to Bengal?

“It was because of Dadi (Ganguly) and my wife that I decided to play this season and retire from Bengal. Otherwise, in 2023 itself, I had made up my mind to call it quits. But Romi and Dadi persuaded me to continue a bit longer,” Saha told Sportstar.

It was back in 2022 when he decided to end his association with the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) after being hurt by some officials questioning his commitment. He switched to Tripura to play domestic cricket from the North Eastern state. But he returned last year after having a long conversation with Sourav Ganguly.

Plan to enjoy retirement

“I want to enjoy my retired life for a while, just with my family. I would have been happier if I had a batting average of 45 or more in international cricket, but it’s okay” he told Sportstar.

With 40 Test matches and 9 ODIs to his name, his career has been greatly shadowed by the great MS Dhoni. But now, the 40-year-old wants to enjoy his life. He plans on traveling, enjoying the breaks, and watching Formula 1 races.

“I have always stepped onto the field with the goal of winning, and this time will be no different. Yes, our chances of qualification are slim, but you cannot approach a game with a defeatist mindset. We will take the field aiming to win and earn some pride,” he concluded.
