It was all about Anil Kumble on February 7, 1999, as the former Indian captain and coach thumped the Pakistan team in Delhi by taking a 10-wicket haul. With this feat, he became the second bowler in Test cricket to achieve this, after Jim Laker of England, who did it back in 1956 against the mighty Australian team. Kumble decimated all the big names and emerged as a legend himself, taking the wickets of Pakistan’s stars, from captain Wasim Akram to Inzamam-ul-Haq. You name the Pakistan XI, and Kumble got them all out single-handedly.

What happened in the 1999 Delhi Test

Many things happened in the 1999 Delhi Test. It was the second match of a two-match series, with India being down after the first. Both teams came into this match after witnessing the memory-filled Chennai Test, where Pakistan came out on top by defeating India by just 12 runs. We also saw the standing ovation Indian cricket fans gave to the Pakistan team for their impressive performance.

When it came to Delhi, India batted first and made a decent 252 runs. When Pakistan came to bat, Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble both cleared the Shaheens and restricted them to 172 runs. With a lead of 80 runs, India capitalized fully and made 339 runs. Sadagopan Ramesh scored 96 runs, giving Pakistan a target of 420 runs.

Initially, when Pakistan came to bat, it looked like they might chase the target as they started really well. Shahid Afridi and Saeed Anwar contributed with a 101-run partnership. But what happened next was the all-Kumble show. Every batter, from the openers to the middle order to the tailenders, got deceived by this tall leg-spinner. Azharuddin and company successfully stopped Pakistan at 207 runs, and India clinched a 212-run victory, leveling the series.

Anil Kumble on his 10-wicket haul

“When I picked up my six wickets, I came back after the tea break – as I had bowled continuously from lunch to tea. At the break, I sat down and thought to myself, here is a chance for me to better my previous best in Test, which was a seven-wicket haul. I went out again and then I took seven, and then eight and nine happened in two deliveries. That is when perhaps when it dawned on me and more on my teammates that I have a chance to pick up all 10”.
